November 2008 James Moore, CSCP, PMP According to Employ Florida Marketplace (www.EmployFlorida.com), the unemployment rate for the Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater MSA was 6.9 percent in August of 2008. This compares with unemployment rates of 6.8% and 6.1% for Florida and the United States, respectively. Having almost 100,000 people out of work, and a higher unemployment rate than the state and national averages, the Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater MSA is an extremely competitive marketplace. With the global economy in crisis, and the potential for small business disincentives after the presidential election, the marketplace will become more competitive in the near term. APICS builds knowledge and skills in operations management professionals to enhance and validate abilities and accelerate careers. We help our members and their organizations successfully compete and build a stronger global economy. The APICS mission directly supports the efforts of it's members seeking operations management positions in production, inventory, materials management, supply chain, logistics, purchasing, and more. Nationally, the APICS Career Center (www.APICS.org) provides resources to assist job seekers as well as employers. Locally, the Florida West Coast Chapter (www.APICS-FLWC.org) provides employment related information connecting local employers and APICS members within the Operations Management community. During next month's PDM on November 11th, we will have a "Career Services" table designated for job seekers and employers who would like to discuss Career Center member benefits for the Florida West Coast Chapter during dinner. As either a job seeker or employer, you will learn more about how you can leverage both national and local Career Services benefits from APICS in this competitive market. James S.
