TOPIC: Driving to Success: The Roush Yates Engines Transformation
Mary Ann will discuss the transformation of Roush Yates Racing Engines' operations management processes.
The company was created in late 2003 as the result of Jack Roush and Robert Yates' vision to combine resources
and talent to provide one of the most competitive racing engines for the NASCAR series.
Doug Yates, CEO of Roush Yates quickly realized the production volume required supply chain skills the
company didn't have. Mary Ann Mauldwin joined the Roush Yates staff in May 2004. Over the past four years
Mary Ann has directed the key operations management objectives for the company.
Mary Ann will discuss the implementation of lean manufacturing objectives as well as the disciplines
leading to the process efficiencies and profitability Roush Yates has accomplished since its inception.
The company has profited from the APICS education and training provided to all employees. Roush Yates has
implemented an ERP system as well as cycle counting, engineering change process, material review board,
supplier certification program and numerous other supply chain disciplines.

Mary Ann Mauldwin is a graduate of the University of North Carolina. She has a Bachelors'
in English and Secondary Education. She is certified at the fellow level in production and
inventory management. Mary Ann achieved APICS' new Certified Supply Chain Professional
certification in December 2006.
Mary Ann has spoken at numerous international conferences and seminars throughout the United
States. She has also published articles on supply chain management and lean manufacturing processes.
Mary Ann's career began with teaching middle school students. After one year in the public
school system, she returned to school and got an Associates Degree in Mechanical Engineering.
Mary Ann taught Industrial Engineering classes for H.B. Maynard Consulting for five years.
Pelton & Crane, a Charlotte based manufacturer of dental equipment, owned by Siemens, realized
the need for an Industrial Engineering Department. Mary Ann joined Pelton & Crane in 1979.
She spent the next 19 years of her career with this company. She moved from Industrial Engineering
to Production and Inventory Management. She was Director of Materials for the last four years
she spent with Pelton & Crane. During Mary Ann's 19 year career with this company, three ERP
systems were implemented, Lean Manufacturing principles were put in place and ISO 9001
certification was achieved.
Mary Ann left Pelton & Crane to become Corporate Purchasing Manager for Kewaunee Scientific in
Statesville, N.C. As Purchasing Manager, new objectives for reducing cost were successfully
implemented utilizing a strategic purchasing philosophy.
Mary Ann joined Thorlo, Inc., a manufacturer of high quality, sports specific socks in 1999.
Mary Ann was Director of Supply Chain Management. Thorlo had implemented SAP about six months
prior to her joining the company. There were many opportunities to utilize the ERP system and
put processes in place to integrate with this system. During Mary Ann's five year tenure with
Thorlo, lead times were reduced and a flexible order fulfillment process was implemented.
Mary Ann is now Director of Operations for Roush and Yates Racing Engines. Mary Ann joined
Roush and Yates in May, 2004. According to Mary Ann, "It has been an exciting opportunity to
utilize the APICS body of knowledge and lean manufacturing principles in another industry,
especially one that is constantly changing."
Mary Ann has served on the APICS Board of Directors as Region XI Vice President for two
years and as VP of Education - SIGs in 2005. At the Charlotte APICS chapter level, Mary Ann
is Chapter President and an instructor. She teaches numerous APICS certification review
classes in the local community colleges and in private industry.
Mary Ann has recently formed a new company, High Speed Learning. She has partnered with
Doug Yates and Carolyn Sly to create a company focused on Operations Management training
and consulting. This has proven to be a very successful resource for the racing industry.
